The Porcupine Herd

We missed the caribou migration by a thread. The last 10 000 stragglers passsed through two weeks before. 110 00 animals in all, each year migrating from the Yukon to their calving grounds in Arctic National Wildlife refuge - and back. The largest longest unimpeded wild animal migration left on earth. All we saw were some poop and a few bones and tracks. LOts of tracks. We did feel the wind though, and the rain, and for a second there I thought I felt some of the intimacy of their lives on top of this world, like when you're out hunting and you know you just missed an animal who came your way - and viceversa.
