Land ho! The Chiswell Islands...
...off of Seward, and the surrounding glaciers, these islands are bursting with seabirds: we indulged. Tufted and Horned Puffin, Thick billed and common Murre and Pigeon Guillemot, Rhinoceros and Parakeet Auklet, Kittiwake. Closer to the mainland: Ancient, Kittlitz's and Marbled Murrelet. The latter nest not on oceanic islands but high on mountain ridges or old-growth trees, far inland. They come out to sea to fish during the day, in fjords close to tidal glaciers, then return to feed their young inland. Who said the ocean and the mainland were separate systems?
